The Nausori Town Council has become the first local, civic building to turn solar, as part of a partnership with the Energy Department.

Environment, Housing and Local Government Minister, Parveen Kumar, said this would be undertaken with its Energy Minimization Program.

“This shall be the first civic building premises in Fiji to be utilizing solar energy and is expected to promote the Green Economy concept,” he said yesterday.

“The proposed project is expected to be completed by the end of December.”

The Ministry and local municipal councils have continually collaborated with the Japanese Government for programs promoting environmental sustainability and solid waste management.

Ongoing projects between the parties include the Nadi River diversion program and a heritage tourism development for Levuka, Fiji’s first UNESCO-listed, world heritage site.

“The two projects are of great importance to the respective towns and shall assist in shaping the future economy,” Mr Kumar added.

“My office shall be consistently meeting Japan officials assigned to the project to ensure facilitation and quick progress.”
